The majority of Australians believe solar power-equipped homes are more valuable than those relying on traditional means of electricity.

New research from realestate.com.au and Origin Energy found that 85% of Australians identify solar rooftop panels as something which adds to a property’s value.

The survey, carried out on realestate.com.au across April 2015, also positioned solar as top of mind when it came to green living. Energy efficient appliances and water savings features also ranked highly and were seen as adding value.

Feature % of Aussies who said it would add value
Solar rooftop panels 85%
Energy efficient appliances 79%
Solar hot water system 78%
Water tanks 70%
Water saving fixtures 47%

Renters would pay more for solar

Three quarters of renters said they would pay additional rent to live in a property with solar energy, with two out of five saying they’d be willing to pay an extra $10 a week.

This is good news for landlords looking to increase the appeal of their rental properties.

Is our roof space a wasted asset?

Phil Craig, Executive General Manager Corporate Affairs at Origin says people should start recognising their roofs as a significant asset.

“This research demonstrates that solar panels could provide a real boost for home owners if they decide to sell. Origin want to encourage Australians to start recognising their empty roof space could be an asset,” says Craig.

REA Group Chief Product Officer Henry Ruiz says the findings reflect increasingly widespread recognition among consumers of the energy generating potential of solar, as well as the pull of green power on home buyers and renters.

“Having solar panels installed on your roof represents a valuable investment in your property, as this research shows,” he says.

“If you’re looking to sell or lease your property, it’s a really simple measure you can take to gain a competitive edge in the market. You should also speak to your agent about mentioning your home’s solar power in your online listing.”
