Growing sales backlog drives company expansion

PTG’s robust technology is a timely solution for municipal wastewater treatment facilities, many of which are aging rapidly and over capacity. Additionally, wastewater treatment is facing increasingly stringent water-quality regulations and rising energy costs. The company is also experiencing strong demand from other industries like the food, beverage, and oil & gas industries. Much of this growing interest is being led by consulting engineering firms as well as technology providers in these various industries, both in the U.S. and abroad. As a result, PTG has accumulated a healthy backlog of sales that is creating jobs at the company’s San Francisco Bay Area headquarters.

Product benchmarking and validation

During 2011, PTG continued to refine its technology while developing new systems and adding product features. The company also conducted numerous performance and stress tests on its advanced wastewater disinfection system, culminating in December, when the PTG System X500 demonstrated it can successfully disinfect large amounts of wastewater — up to 500,000 gallons per day. “This represents a major milestone for our technology, and demonstrates its potential for cost-effectively scaling to handle much larger volumes,” noted Ryan.

Industry awards

In May of 2011, PTG participated in the Blue Tech Forum, a water technology conference focused on new solutions to water scarcity, rising energy costs, and population growth. PTG won the award for the Best “Go to Market” Strategy. Then, in November 2011, PTG was awarded a 2011 “Best of What’s New” award from Popular Science magazine, winning in the Green Tech category. PTG was subsequently profiled in the December issue of the magazine.

PTG’s “right time, right place” technology story

PTG is the first and only company in the world to combine wastewater disinfection with renewable-energy generation. PTG’s patented technology utilizes the digester gas (often referred to as biogas, a natural by-product of wastewater treatment) as fuel to drive a turbine that generates renewable electricity. The hot exhaust air from the turbine (energy that is typically wasted) is then passed through a series of heat exchangers that increase the temperature of the wastewater to a level that disinfects the wastewater stream.

By solving two problems for the price of one, PTG’s technology is significantly more cost-effective and more energy-efficient than other methods. Unlike other wastewater disinfection approaches, PTG’s systems do not require toxic chemicals such as chlorine or costly electrical power and expensive lamps in the case of UV.
