Viridor’s planned 26 MW waste to energy facility in Sutton, South London has been granted an environmental permit by the UK’s Environment Agency.

The agency said that Viridor – a part of the Pennon Group (LSE: PNN) – been permitted to process a maximum of 302,500 tonnes of non-hazardous waste per year at the facility.

Once complete it is anticipated that the facility will divert 95% of waste from the existing Beddington Farmlands landfill and generate 26 MW of electricity, exporting over 22MW to the National Grid, while using the rest itself.

The project follows a procurement process by the South London Waste Partnership to secure a contract for residual waste treatment across the London Boroughs of Kingston, Croydon, Merton, and Sutton.

According to the Environment Agency, the decision to issue a permit follows a rigorous assessment process, including public consultations in October 2012 and June 2013.

The permit, issued under the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2010, sets limits that will ensure the installation operates without causing harm to the environment and human health.

“Environmental permitting is independent to the planning process. Our role is to ensure the site will operate in accordance with UK and European legislation and that it would not cause harm to human health or the local environment,” explained the agency’s environment manager, Chris Hazelton.

According to Hazelton the environmental permit sets out stringent conditions that a plant must adhere to, including requirements for Viridor to comply with the relevant legislation including strict air emission and monitoring standards.

“This decision follows a thorough assessment of the application we received, which included two consultation sessions and feedback from members of the public and other organisations,” he added.
