Steam turbines determine how effectively a thermal waste-to-energy plant converts recovered heat into useful electricity and heat. Triveni Turbines is applying customised machines to plants that must handle variable steam conditions while supporting grid export, industrial steam demand and district heating.
Combined heat and power configurations make better use of the steam than electricity-only operation. Triveni says turbines designed for this duty can reduce costs by 14–15% compared with standalone power generation, while waste-to-energy plants provide steady baseload output in markets across Europe and Asia.

At Créteil near Paris, a plant upgrade will raise annual treatment capacity to 345,000 tonnes of household and medical waste. A new 28.9 MW turbine replaces a 20 MW unit and is designed to export electricity while supplying process steam and district heat, increasing the amount of energy recovered from every tonne treated.
Modernisation can also extend the life of existing assets. In Turkey, an underperforming 12 MW turbine was rebuilt from an 11-stage impulse design into a 25-stage reaction machine, restoring full output and addressing vibration and bearing problems. Such upgrades show how turbine engineering can improve both plant reliability and circular-energy performance without replacing an entire facility.
