covanta-logoNew Orleans, LA – May 21, 2013 – Covanta Energy Corporation (NYSE: CVA) and its services arm subsidiary, Covanta 4Recovery are exhibiting this week at the 2013 WasteExpo Conference in New Orleans (Booth #4875). For 45 years, WasteExpo has been North America’s largest solid waste and recycling tradeshow serving both the private and public sectors. The show boasts over 550 exhibiting companies and over 12,000 total participants.

Covanta 4Recovery helps communities, businesses, and institutions implement the holistic reduce, reuse, recycle, recover waste management strategy. With direct access to North America’s largest network of Energy-from-Waste facilities, Covanta 4Recovery is uniquely positioned to empower clients to meet zero landfill goals by offering fully integrated collection, recycling and energy recovery services. Covanta 4Recovery also offers complete destruction of sensitive materials, protecting brand equity and delivering peace of mind.

Recovering energy from residual waste left over after recycling at Energy-from-Waste facilities (also referred to as waste-to-energy), offsets greenhouse gases and produces much needed renewable energy; reduces landfill use which preserves open space; protects the environment by employing state-of-the-art equipment and systems; and maximizes recycling and the reuse of resources.

Covanta operates 44 Energy-from-Waste facilities for communities worldwide. These facilities collectively process approximately 20 million tons of waste per year into clean, renewable energy for one million homes. In addition, Covanta facilities are also significant recyclers of metal, annually recovering approximately 415,000 tons of ferrous metal and over 16,000 tons non-ferrous metals – the equivalent amount of steel and aluminum needed to build five Golden Gate Bridges and produce over one billion aluminum beverage cans.

According to the U.S. EPA, for every ton of municipal solid waste processed at Energy-from-Waste facilities, greenhouse gas emissions are reduced by the equivalent of approximately one ton less of carbon dioxide emissions. This is possible due to the avoidance of methane from landfills (a potent greenhouse gas), the offset of greenhouse gases from fossil fuel electrical production, and the recovery of metals for recycling.
