Kanadevia Inova to renew Geneva’s Cheneviers waste-to-energy plant

Kanadevia Inova has signed a contract with Services Industriels de Genève to supply the core thermal treatment systems for Cheneviers IV, a replacement waste-to-energy facility at Aire-la-Ville near Geneva. The project will modernise a site that has recovered energy from the canton’s non-recyclable waste for decades.

The new plant will have two treatment lines, each designed for 10.5 tonnes of waste per hour, for a combined annual capacity of around 160,000 tonnes. Each boiler will provide about 35.8 MW of gross thermal capacity, while flue-gas heat pumps will add another 10 MW. Approximately 30 MWth is expected to be available for Geneva’s district-heating network.

Kanadevia Inova’s scope extends from the waste feed chutes to the stack and includes associated cabling, while the existing steam turbine will remain in service. The new equipment will replace combustion and flue-gas treatment systems that have operated for more than 30 years at the current Cheneviers facility.

Construction must be carefully phased because waste treatment will continue on the site. Cheneviers IV will be built where the former Cheneviers II section is being cleared, while Cheneviers III remains operational. That unit will be dismantled only after the new plant is commissioned. The full programme is expected to take roughly four and a half years.

The contract strengthens Kanadevia Inova’s position in the Swiss waste-to-energy market and follows other major domestic projects at Hagenholz and Emmenspitz. For Geneva, the investment combines reliable treatment capacity with greater recovery of useful heat for the city’s expanding district-energy system.
