Cutting-Edge New Anaerobic Digestion Plant

(PRWEB UK) 20 October 2011

logoInSource Energy’s cutting-edge anaerobic digestion facility, hosted at the Premier Foods site in Rogerstone, South Wales – the largest food processing plant in Europe – demonstrates how “waste to energy” facilities bring financial as well as environmental benefits says Welsh Government Environment Minister John Griffiths.

Shortlisted for two prestigious environmental awards, the InSource Energy anaerobic digestion facility treats unavoidable food waste, and uniquely also handles contaminated plastics, to create heat and biogas and reduce the waste sent to landfill.

Fully operational since June 2011, the plant will handle 15,000 tonnes of food waste a year, creating 300kW of energy which is sold to the host site’s at 15% discount compared to their mains supply.

The Minister said:

“Food is identified as a priority material in Wales’ waste strategy Towards Zero Waste; while our focus must be on preventing food waste wherever possible there is compelling evidence that anaerobic digestion is the best solution for treating unavoidable food waste.

“This plant demonstrates that anaerobic digestion can bring financial as well as environmental benefits. I hope that other businesses adopt this technology to treat food waste which they cannot prevent.”

The visit took place on 13 October 2011.
