Stockholm’s new Resursutvinning plant can sort 50 tonnes of municipal waste per hour with minimal manual intervention. Delivered by STADLER for Stockholm Vatten och Avfall, the facility recovers food waste, plastics and metals that residents accidentally place in the residual-waste stream.
Two parallel lines receive material through five covered walking floors and dosing conveyors. After bulky and hazardous items are removed, drum screens separate material by size. Five near-infrared and visual spectrometers then identify closed green bags containing food waste so they can be extracted without being opened.

Additional optical sorters recover plastics by polymer and colour, while magnets and eddy-current equipment separate ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Movable conveyors beneath the screens let operators adapt to seasonal changes in waste composition without shutting down the line.
The compact multilevel layout keeps drives and maintenance points accessible, and a central control system handles routine operation. Parallel lines provide resilience during maintenance or partial outages. By moving organics into biological treatment and packaging back into recycling, the plant reduces the material sent for incineration and improves resource recovery for the 1.5 million residents and businesses served by SVOA.
